Characteristics of Umrah

Umrah is the holiest journey, it makes way for you to dive into the sea of blessings and mercy of Allah. Umrah is a journey that every Muslim must undertake at least once in their lifetime if they are able. The Umrah pilgrimage can be performed at any time of the year, unlike the Hajj, which has to be undertaken during a specific month.

The word ‘Umrah’ is derived from the Arabic root  ‘Umr’, which means ‘to visit’. Umrah is therefore sometimes referred to as the ‘minor pilgrimage’ or the ‘lesser pilgrimage’ about

Hajj, which is the ‘major pilgrimage’.

Both Umrah and Hajj are acts of worship that are Sunnah – recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Although they are not obligatory, Muslims are encouraged to undertake them if they can do so, both physically and financially.

Sa’i:

After Tawaf, you must perform Sa’i, which is walking seven times between the mountains of Safa and Marwah.

Taqsir or Qasr:

This is the final pillar of Umrah, and it is performed after Sa’i. Taqsir means to shorten your hair, and Qasr means to shave your head. Both men and women must perform either Taqsir or Qasr.

• Perform Wudhu (ablution) with the intention of Umrah
• Enter the Masjid al-Haram with the right foot, saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah)

• Perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah seven times, starting from Safa
